Where would we be without our key fobs? Hopelessly stuck, that’s what!
Opening your car doors, locking and unlocking your vehicle, opening the boot – we rely on our key fobs every day!
As such, your key fobs are one of the most important parts of your daily grind. Imagine misplacing it – how can you get to work?
And what if you have documents or essential items inside your vehicle, such as money, other keys, IDs, etc? Worse-case scenarios, what if there is an emergency and you need to get somewhere fast?
When your fob goes missing, the first thing you’ll do is turn your home upside down to try to find it. You’ll check bags, drawers, under couches and beds. If luck is on your side, it will show up!
And in every other case, it’s time to call an auto locksmith in Melbourne.
Once they’ve worked their magic, we suggest implementing a couple of these habits to stop yourself losing your key fob ever again!
Key fobs
Most cars made in the last decade or so feature key fobs. While in most cases these fobs are used for remote unlocking, brand-new cars are taking it a step further, with fobs that also double as:
- Keyless entry fobs
- Spare keys
- Car transponders
- Remote controls
While putting each of these functions in the one fob has certainly made things more convenient, it has also had the unintended side-effect of making things extremely difficult if you lose your key fob!
Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do to stop this happening.
In particular, many of the motorists our auto locksmith help ask how they can track their key fobs in the future!
Can a lost key fob be tracked?
Despite their high-tech nature, there’s no way to track your key fobs out-of-the-box… yet.
Luckily for you, there are plenty of third-party options you can use to keep tabs on your key fobs until then!
Key finders in particular are a great option.
Essentially, this is a tiny, keychain-sized fob that you can attach to your key fob (or car keys, or wallet, or phone, or anything that’s prone to disappearing!)
Using Bluetooth, these key trackers sync with your phone (don’t worry, even budget key trackers tend to have range in dozens of metres).
Depending on the brand you choose, your key tracker may:
- Emit a sound to help you find it
- Use GPS to pinpoint its location
- Alert you once you’re a certain distance away
All you’ll need to do to locate your key fob once you’re set up is whip out your phone and open the app it comes bundled with – no more frantic rushing around, or having to retrace your steps to find your key fob!
What to do when you lose your key fob
Okay, so your key fob isn’t in its usual spot, and you haven’t attached a tracking fob to it either. Don’t worry (yet, anyway) – just be sure to…
1) Look everywhere
… and we mean everywhere!
Be sure to double check less-obvious areas such as your laundry basket or your cat’s bed, just in case. In many cases, your key fob may simply be in one of these spots.
2) Dig up your spare key
Having a hard time finding your car key fob? Need to get somewhere urgently?
In these cases, you may have to dig out your spares.
While it’s less convenient, at least you won’t be stranded anymore – of course, this only works if you’re at home when you lose your key fob or remote!
If this happens while you’re on the road, we instead suggest…
